A recent study reveals that people who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such medications need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
